i’ll never have it all figured out

hell i have no idea what’s happening around me anymore

my mind feels like a prison and a sanctuary at once, littered with potholes in the place of memories and i don’t understand anymore what’s going on in there half the time

but i’m working things out, you know? it’s not getting easier, but it’s getting better. things aren’t grey 24/7. they’re down to 18hours a day. that’s improvement?

i’ll never know everything, i’ll never know the answers to why my life is this way, and maybe why i’m this way?

but somehow i’m okay with that.

depression recovery

it just occurred to me that recovery from long-time depression is a lot like re-learning how to walk. you crawl then you stand then you take your first steps then you walk. i’m learning to stand again and learning to put my life back together, but with the recent events it feels like i was learning to put my feet forward and then i fell. but i guess it’s just a matter of getting up again and learning how to keep going. my therapist said that it’s harder for me because i never realized just how long i’ve had depression, and that with the way that things are, i literally have to put my life back together from scratch. not many people have to do that, she said, and i’m courageous to be willing to face everything in the face because i want to be a better person.

i really do want to be better. i really do want to live a good life away from depression and the depressive tendencies i’ve had everyday since i was 13. i want to live the next 10 years without suicidal tendencies, unlike how i lived through my entire teenage life. i know depression never really goes away, but i want to know my triggers, i want to know how to handle them, i want to know how to handle me, i want to know me without the depression; i want to know me happy. it’s hard because i don’t know any of that; i don’t know a life that wasn’t clouded in before and after thoughts of this is temporary, because i am not supposed to be happy. i’m trying to be better, i’m trying to do good, i’m trying to be a good person that isn’t so damned lonely all the time. it’s hard. i’m building my life from scratch and i’m doing this on my own, but i’m just grateful now that i have people who are willing to walk with me at least through this really lonely journey, and i don’t have to be so alone anymore.

even if i am restarting my life at 23, free from all the demons that haunted me and pulled me down through my teenage years and made my life a living hell, even if i am trying to get back up right now while going through loss, even if i am trying to piece together an identity that is me without the burdens, even if i am facing memories i never knew i had and having to learn to trust my own body and my own memories not to betray me, even if i am coming to painful realizations about my childhood and past, even as i reclaim my identity at 23— at least i am learning to walk again. maybe one day i can walk and run towards the future without immense fear of what it might bring, without a lingering thought that all happiness is fleeting and i’ll never be happy. maybe one day i can face the future and embrace it. even if it feels like i’m restarting life at 23, at least i’m starting life at all.

PFC Bradley Manning has been in jail awaiting trial for nearly 1,000 days for exposing war crimes, corruption, and widespread abuse.

Nobel Peace Prize nominee PFC Bradley Manning, a 24-year-old Army intelligence analyst, is accused of releasing the Collateral Murder video, that shows the killing of unarmed civilians and two Reuters journalists, by a US Apache helicopter crew in Iraq. He is also accused of sharing the Afghan War Diary, the Iraq War Logs, and series of embarrassing US diplomatic cables. These documents were published by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, and they have illuminated such issues as the true number and cause of civilian casualties in Iraq, along with a number of human rights abuses by U.S.-funded contractors and foreign militaries, and the role that spying and bribes play in international diplomacy. Given the war crimes exposed, if PFC Bradley Manning was the source for these documents, he should be given a medal of honor.

Not a single person has been harmed by the release of this information. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has called the effect of WikiLeaks’ releases on U.S. foreign relations “fairly modest.” Yet the Obama administration has chosen to persecute the whistle-blower rather than prosecute the war criminals who were exposed. While the prosecution has declared it does not intend to seek the death penalty, they do seek to lock PFC Bradley Manning away for life, with the most ridiculous charge of ‘aiding the enemy,’ even though chat logs attributed to Bradley by the FBI clearly show intent only to inform the public and promote “discussion, debates, and reforms.”

Soldiers are promised fair treatment and a speedy trial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). However, the soldiers responsible for PFC Manning’s care took it upon themselves to abuse him by keeping him locked up in solitary confinement for the first 10 months of his incarceration. During this time, Bradley was denied meaningful exercise, social interaction, sunlight, and on a number of occasions he was forced to stay completely naked. These conditions were unique to Bradley and are illegal even under US military law, as they amount to extreme pre-trial punishment. In March 2011, chief US State Department spokesperson PJ Crowley called PFC Manning’s treatment at the Quantico, Virginia, Marine Corps brig “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.” He was forced to resign shortly after admitting this. Since resigning, he has stated that the prosecution’s heavy-handed persecution of PFC Manning has undermined the government’s credibility.

Bradley’s treatment sparked a probe by the United Nations special rapporteur on torture, Juan Mendez. Mr. Mendez stated that he has been “frustrated by the prevarication of the US government with regard to my attempts to visit Mr. Manning.” After having his requests to visit Bradley repeatedly blocked, and after completing a fourteen month investigation, Mr. Mendez issued a statement saying that PFC Bradley Manning’s treatment has been “cruel and inhuman.”

It only took one week in April 2011 to have over a half million people sign a petition calling on President Obama to end the isolation and torture of Bradley Manning. The Obama administration’s ongoing persecution of Bradley Manning has served as “a chilling deterrent to other potential whistleblowers committed to public integrity,” and over 300 top legal scholars have declared that Bradley’s treatment was a violation of the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment, as well as a violation of the Fifth Amendment’s guarantee against punishment without trial. Among the signatories is professor Laurence Tribe, a Harvard professor who taught President Obama. Professor Tribe was, until recently, a senior advisor to the US Justice Department.

Partially in response to public outcry, on April 21, 2011, Bradley was moved from Quantico to Fort Leavenworth, KS, where his conditions greatly improved. The very day he was moved, President Obama was surprised at a breakfast fundraiser by a group of protesters. At the end of the fundraiser, a member of the Bradley Manning Support Network, Logan Price, questioned him about Bradley’s situation. The President stated that “He [Bradley Manning] broke the law.” This pretrial declaration of guilt that has caused concern among legal experts, who argue it is clearly a case of ‘undue command influence’. President Obama is the highest ranking military commander, and soldiers follow his orders and his direction. By declaring PFC Bradley Manning guilty, he set the tone and direction of the subordinate military prosecution. It is now difficult for soldiers to express support for PFC Bradley Manning, who like many soldiers who follow the lead of their commander-in-chief, assume PFC Bradley Manning is guilty. Finally, reinforcing the assumption of Manning’s guilt, no charges were filed against any of the soldiers who took it upon themselves to abuse Bradley while he was under their supervision.

Bradley Manning has a growing list of supporters who want all the charges against him dropped. Among the supporters is the famous whistle-blower, Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers in 1971. Recognizing the valor required to tell the truth, Ellsberg calls PFC Bradley Manning a hero and a patriot. We agree. Drop all the charges, and free PFC Bradley Manning.

Ancient Philippine scripts are systems of writing that developed and flourished in the Philippine islands in about 300 BC. These scripts are related to other Southeast Asian systems of writing that developed from South Indian Brahmi scripts used in Asoka Inscriptions and Pallava Grantha, a type of writing used in the writing of palm leaf books called grantha during the ascendancy of the Pallava dynasty about the 5th century.

Isaac Taylor sought to show that the system of writing, particularly the Baybayin script, was introduced into the Philippines from the Coast of Bengal sometime before the 8th century. In attempting to show such relationship, Taylor presented graphic representations of Kistna and Assam letters like g, k, ng, t, m, h, and u, which resemble the same letters in Baybayin.

Fletcher Gardner argued that the Philippine scripts have “very great similarity” with the Asoka alphabets. T. H. Pardo de Tavera supported Gardner’s view, and he also wrote that “the ancient Filipino alphabets have resemblance with the characters of the Asokan inscriptions.” David Diringer, accepting the view that the alphabets of the Indonesian archipelago have their origins from India, opined that these, particularly that which is used in the Ci-Aruton inscriptions of the West Javan rajah, King Purnavarman, constituted the earliest types of Philippine syllabic writing. These according to Diringer were brought to the Islands through the Buginese characters in Celebes. The script would fall within the middle of the 5th century.

The Dravidian influence on the ancient Filipino scripts was obviously of Tamil origin,” wrote V. A. Makarenko, in proposing another view on the origin of Philippine scripts. Based primarily on the work of H. Otley Beyer, this theory argues that these scripts reached the Philippines via the last of the “six waves of migration that passed through the Philippine archipelago from the Asian continent about 200 BC,” constituting the Malayans and Dravidians, “primarily the Tamil from Malaya and the adjacent territories and from Indonesia and South India as well.”

The early Filipinos wrote on many different materials; leaves, palm fronds, tree bark and fruit rinds, but the most common material was bamboo. The writing tools or panulat were the points of daggers or small pieces of iron. Once the letters were carved into the bamboo, it was wiped with ash to make the characters stand out more. Sharpened splits of bamboo were used with coloured plant saps to write on more delicate materials such as leaves.

Much earlier writing techniques were also devised by early Filipinos, dating 900 AD. The Philippine copperplate was inscribed by hammering the letters onto the metal using a sharp instrument. The letters show closely joined and overlapping dots from the hammering.
